I erase a lot of unread email blogs. Yours, however, I read slowly and savor. I sent part of this to my own Dad who just lost his 100 year old father.

This is certainly a lot to digest; especially now having discovered your blog. Your story and poetry about your dad and his recent passing is cheering.

You were blessed to have had your dad live as long as he did. My dad died when I was only 20 of a sudden heart attack at 61 in 1975. I have to tell you that I was most inspired from you most recent post of "walking in my dad's shoes". Personally, I had a great dad.

Len, I know your father was a special person because you are, and I know of your respect and love for both of your parents. In the past few years my father and I have gotten so much closer, in part because he is like a child now and appreciates all that I do for him. He was such a task master and not a very nice person for so many years, so I truly treasure the happy times I have with him now. It is very difficult to lose a parent, through death or through mental loss like my father. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hi Len, I really enjoy reading your blog emails. I have to say that honestly when I receive an email so long in length, I start out reading and wake up at the end with only the gist of what I read, but I find that your writing draws me in and I read every word. You have a wonderful way with words and expression. I'm sorry you have gone through so many trials this last year. Keep up the writing.

Len -
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us. It is inspirational.

Have you read this article from the NYTimes? Athough it's about depression and asks the question of what survival advantage is gained by a species that gets depressed, it goes further into asking questions that you posed - about when we do our best thinking, and is tragedy the necessary catalyst.
